Unifor Casino Members ready for strike

If agreements are not reached by this Friday, nearly 2,000 workers from eight GCGC casinos will go on strike.

The Unifor union in Canada may go on strike if they don’t see new agreements by midnight on Friday, July 22. The union is trying to negotiate better conditions for employees working at slots, table games, food and beverage, security, and other positions at eight GCGC casinos. Prioritized wages and pensions are some of the benefits which Unifor seeks to negotiate. The union wants to negotiate the shift of temporary or part-time workers into full-time jobs.

Unifor is the largest union in the private sector in Canada with over 300,000 members. Equal rights for the workers are also advocated for by the union.

Unifor Local 504 represents hundreds of workers at Elements Casino Mohawk and Elements Casino Brantford. Elements Casino Flamboro has members that are represented by Unifor Local 504. Security workers at Elements Casino Mohawk are represented by Unifor. More than 1,700 employees are represented by the unions in eight different GCGC venues.

The president of Unifor Local 1090 commented on the topic by saying that they value their customers and the relationships they have built with guests over the years. Benefits for casino workers and good wages translate directly into job satisfaction, which is good for business.

Lana Payne, Unifor’s national secretary-treasurer, said that casino employees were helped by the financial rebound of the industry after the swine flu. She said that Unifor wants to help those employees that contribute to the success of the casinos.
