Casino employees are preparing for a strike

Great Canadian Gaming Corporation is the employer of employees of three Durham casinos. The unionized staff members of three of the company’s properties expressed their discontent over the lack of a new collective agreement. They plan to go on strike if there is no agreement before July 22, 2022.

Great Canadian Gaming Corporation is one of the largest casino companies in Canada, and it operates more than 20 gaming properties across the country. The properties in Durham are Great Blue Heron Casino, Casino Ajax, and Pickering Casino Resort. Unifor, the union that represents unionized members of the three venues, is still negotiating with the employer.

There is time running out

Ten of Unifor’s bargaining teams are in talks with Great Canadian Gaming Corporation over a new collective contract. Thousands of workers from the three Durham casinos are represented by the one who is here. Rob Bicknell, a Trustee with Unifor Local 1090, said on Tuesday that discussions are not at a standstill and that the union is in active negotiations.

According to Mr. Bicknell, the union is optimistic that an agreement can be reached before the Friday deadline. He said that neither of the sides wants to go to work without a contract. According to him, Unifor Local 1090 has unionized over 800 employees at three casinos.

Wages, benefits, and pensions are on the top of the bargaining list according to the union. Its table games, slots, security, cashiering, food and beverage, kitchen and culinary, guest services, housekeeping and maintenance are all covered by this. It is looking to increase the number of stable jobs by converting part-time or casual positions into full-time jobs.

Chuck Keeling, a representative of the gaming conglomerate, shared in an email response that the company continues to discuss terms with members of the union. He noted that the gaming leader remains committed to reaching an agreement which would award team members of the company with fair and attractive wages, as well as great benefits and career opportunities.

Other casino employees in Ontario are willing to demonstrate against their employer. There are unionized staff members of Casino Woodbine, Shorelines Casino Thousand Islands, Shorelines Casino Peterborough, Elements Casino Brantford, and Elements Casino Mohawk. It remains to be seen whether an agreement can be reached.

There is a new contract for the staff at the Windsor casino

The new contract will give staff a wage increase over the next three years. Their wages will increase by CA$0.50 in the first year, by CA$ 0.75 in the second year, and by CA$0.50 in the third year.
