The Prevention of Gambling Addiction, a research programme sponsored by the Dutch Gambling Authority, will begin this year.

The programme will run for three years and contribute to the policy goals outlined in the Netherlands’ Remote Gambling Act.

ZonMw, an organisation that supports health-related research, has developed this programme and an initial funding round for project proposals is expected very soon.

According to ZonMw, there will be two open funding rounds for which research projects can be submitted.

The Addiction Prevention Fund was established by the Remote Gambling Act.

The goal of the research programme is to contribute to the prevention and treatment of gambling addiction, gambling-related harm and gambling problems by developing new knowledge and stimulating its use.

Prevention of Gambling Addiction has been going on for a long time. In August 2020, ZonMw was commissioned to develop the programme, and since then, the KSA has offered regular updates.

The Dutch mental health institute, Trimbos, published a literature study late last year which mapped out existing research into gambling addiction and identified areas requiring further study.

Obtaining new knowledge that contributes to the prevention and treatment of gambling addiction and gambling problems was one of the objectives outlined by ZonMw.

Promoting national and international collaboration in gambling addiction research is one of the things that strengthens the impact of knowledge on prevention and treatment practice.
