This week, Ontarians learned the name of a new gambling brand that will be allowed to enter the province’s regulated iGaming and mobile sports betting landscape. Check Group has obtained an affiliate license from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario to legally launch its flashpicks in the jurisdiction.
Ontario launched its digital market for private gambling and sports betting operators on April 4, 2022. The aim of the sector is to stop locals from spending millions of dollars on illegal websites, and it is the first of its kind across the country. Over the course of three months, the market has generated more than $4 billion.
The license was granted by the AGCO
Checkd Group has a license from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario that allows it to launch its brand into the gaming sector in the province. Ontario gamblers will soon be able to visit flashpicks.com which will give them access to direct links to betting websites that have also been licensed to operate in the new and local market.
The company also has an Ontario license, as well as the appointment of a head of US operations. He has spent the last six years with Checkd’s division, so he is well-equipped to handle his new role. He worked as head of social, head of brand operations and commercial manager.
Ontario is an important sports betting jurisdiction and it is one which complies with a high standard of regulatory requirements. He added that the license for the province is a major milestone for the company, which further confirms the brand’s rapid success since the launch of its flashpicks platform in numerous U.S. markets this year.
Checkd Group will debut in Canada’s most populous province on Monday, September 12, 2022. The company will launch its mobile sportsbook services to the regulated market, making it the latest operator to make the shift from grey market to regulated market. It will be accessible to locals on the internet.
The results from the first quarter
The first fiscal numbers on the new market were issued by iGaming Ontario at the end of August 2022, after a long wait. The project numbers are slightly higher than the initial ones. According to the report, for the first three months of the year, operators had a wagering handle of over CA 4 billion, but only a small amount of tax revenue. More operators have joined since then, which is expected to increase the numbers.
The market is expected to be dominated by former-grey market operators, as they are popular among local bettors. Sports Interaction, which has been live in the province for over two decades, has made the switch as it has been licensed by the AGCO. It is run by Mohawk Online, a socio-economic initiative owned by the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake.
The Checkd Group continued its North American expansion with an Ontario licence.
