Great Canadian Entertainment is the company that oversees the two locations. The casino locations have seen their workers on the picket line for over a year. The main goal of the strike is an overall salary increase and a reduction of the employer’s reliance on a precarious part-time workforce. Casino workers were looking for better conditions and a strike was the only way to go.
There is a tentative agreement
The official inking of the tentative agreements took place on August 4, 2022, and individuals have been looking forward to it. Lana Payne, Unifor National Secretary-Treasurer, conveyed her heartfelt congratulations to the unionized workers who achieved their aim and will be pursuing improved working conditions and fair treatment in the future. There will be more details about the tentative agreement in the near future.
The membership votes are expected to take place on August 5, 2022, which is the next mandatory step of the process. The negotiations that took place were not easy, as the casino operator has its own position, and changing it was not an easy task, made it clear by the President of Local 1090 The unionized casino workers reached a beneficial tentative agreement after taking a principled stand for better working conditions.
Mr. Dalton made it clear that the casino workers of Ontario deserve stability during these trying times. In July, Unifor Local 1090 members met for a coordinated bargaining table to seek an overall improvement. The reliance on part-time jobs was something that needed to be changed.
Negotiations are still going on
There are several land-based casino locations overseen by Great Canadian Entertainment that have already reached successful agreements. When it comes to union negotiations, the locations of Elements Casino Mohawk, Shorelines Casino Thousand Islands, and Great Blue Heron Casino all managed to reach the goal they had set back in July.
There is a tentative agreement that has been reached at the Pickering Casino Resort. It could be recalled that earlier this week a moving vehicle hit a striking casino worker at the legal picket line. The individual had to be taken to the hospital in an ambulance because of his injuries, including a concussion and broken ankle. The casino worker is recovering at home.
The video of the vehicular assault was initially refused to be given to the police officers by the contract security officials of Great Canadian Gaming Corporation.
