Unifor and Great Canadian Gaming Corporation had until Friday, July 22, 2022, to agree on a new collective agreement. The two parties did not find a middle ground in their negotiations for unionized employees of the two South Durham gaming properties before the deadline. The strike commenced at both venues.
Last week, Unifor and its members threatened the operator of eight casinos in Ontario if an agreement wasn’t reached by midnight on Friday. The union was able to strike deals for six of the gaming amenities by the deadline. They could not be found for the two casinos in South Durham.
There is work continuing
Despite the strikes at the two gaming amenities, the employer has reported that work at the venues will continue 24 hours a day, as they offer slots and electronic table games. The live table games at Pickering Casino Resorts will be suspended until further notice. Unifor Local 1090 warns patrons about possible short delays.
The labour union wants visitors to approach the picket lines slowly and safely. In order to show their support for the staff who are fighting for a fair and equitable collective agreement, patrons will most likely be urged by the protesting staff to honk their horns. The emergency vehicle will have unimpeded access to all the entrances of both properties.
The union advised patrons to use the west entrance of the gaming establishment, which is towards Squire Beach Road. They can avoid unsafe traffic backups on Church Street by using this method. During the time of the ongoing picket line, they wanted to take their funds out of Durham.
The management of Casino Ajax said in a statement that it is hopeful that this type of disruption will have a limited impact on its operations. Several contingency plans have been put in place by the casino that will allow it to remain open. The Casual restaurant will be open from Wednesday to Sunday, but the Getaway restaurant will be open from Tuesday to Saturday.
There is an agreement between six casinos
Unifor revealed over the weekend that its bargaining teams were able to agree on new terms and sign tentative agreements for six casino properties of Great Canadian Gaming Corporation. Elements Casino Mohawk and Shorelines Casino Thousand Islands are two of the six venues. There will be a vote this week to approve the contract.
In March this year, Unifor Local 444 successfully negotiated a new deal for its unionized employees of Caesars Windsor Casino. The new agreement would increase the wages of staff over the course of three years, and discussion began a month prior to that. According to the union, almost all of the staff agreed to the terms.
